As you read about our call to serve in the Dominican Republic you may be wondering why we're using the phrase Hands & Feet. It's a fair question.
We are operating with the simplest of mission statements: SERVE.
As we thought about what our service might look like, we kept coming back to the idea of simply being available in whatever capacity was most beneficial to those we're serving. In that sense, we want to have willing HANDS and ready FEET.
Much of our time spent in the Dominican Republic has been spent on our feet. Whether it's walking to the community park, jumping rope with kids, standing in prayer circles or standing in worship during a church service, our FEET get plenty of work while we're there.
We've also spent time holding children, laying hands on people during prayer, clapping during worship services and shaking hands with new friends. Our HANDS see plenty of action too!
I've often heard the phrase, "Be the hands and feet of Jesus." While this phrase isn't in the Bible, it's not much of a jump from 1 Corinthians 12:27 which says, "All of you together are Christ's body, and each of you is a part of it."
As our call is to serve it seems appropriate to consider ourselves the HANDS & FEET of Christ's body.
The idea of being HANDS & FEET also keeps us focused. It would be easy to start by serving and then seek to take on other roles. We will certainly be open to whatever type of service God asks of us but we don't want to seek any role beyond that of a servant.
